Maison Jar is a low-waste grocery store in Brooklyn, NY, offering food, home essentials, and personal care items without unnecessary packaging. Designed for sustainability, the store features durable, recycled, and natural materials, creating a welcoming space that fosters community and mindful shopping.

Inspired by European farmer markets, apothecaries, and American general stores, the layout encourages a direct connection between customers and products. A flexible, modular design accommodates retail, workshops, events, and pop-ups. Natural finishes—wood, cork, and lime plaster—set a serene tone, while reclaimed wood and recycled terrazzo reinforce eco-conscious values.

The store is divided into three key areas: an open entrance with a central cash/deli counter, a bulk food section with gravity bins and oak dividers for intuitive navigation, and a home & beauty section styled like a living room. Custom fixtures, including a hand-crafted bejuco pendant lamp from Mexico, enhance the store’s thoughtful aesthetic.

Beyond retail, Maison Jar is a platform for education and sustainable living, redefining grocery shopping in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable interior category of Dezeen Awards 2022. Learn more on Dezeen.
